Transitions

Over the past few weeks many transitions have occurred for Miss Evelina Marie-Claire.

For starters, the biggest transition being from bottles of formula to sippies of cow’s milk (the Zoli straw cup continues to be our savior!!). We have been extremely lucky on this front. Evelina appears to enjoy the taste of milk and doesn’t have a huge attachment to the bottle, meaning she doesn’t mind taking formula or milk out of a sippy, which apparently, some babies have difficulty with. When Evelina was about 11 ½ months we started replacing 1 ounce of formula with 1 ounce of milk in each of her daily bottles. Once we knew that it wasn’t impacting her digestion, we increased the milk to formula ratio every week. After her 12 month well-baby visit, we decided to start offering her cow’s milk in a sippy only, with a goal of having her drink 12-16 ounces of milk a day, per the recommendation of her pediatrician. For the first few days she was doing well but we noticed lots of messy diapers (up to 6 a day, ick!!) and some night-waking. Even though we had gradually introduced milk, the transition to only milk seemed to be difficult on her sensitive tummy. We decided to offer her formula in the morning and at bedtime and cow’s milk during the day until she became regular again. As of today, she only drinks out of her straw sippy (no more bottles….kind of bittersweet really), and drinks exclusively cow’s milk with the exception of a sippy of formula at bedtime. In the coming weeks, we will attempt to stop giving her a sippy at bedtime, but a part of me worries she will wake up during the night hungry even though she gets 3 meals a day, 2 snacks and 12-16 ounces of milk.

In other news, Evelina no longer naps in a pack ‘n play at school. She has successfully made the transition to sleeping on a mat with a blankie and her Gigi. Sniff, sniff…she is becoming such a big girl. Many times, her teachers will sit with her and rub her back until she drifts off to dreamland, but once she is asleep she will nap for an hour or so. When she is in her crib and wakes up from a nap, she will sit up/stand up/crawl around and start playing until we go and fetch her (don’t get me wrong, she isn’t perfect, she does cry often as well). I asked her teachers what she does when she wakes up from a nap on the mat and many times, she will crawl over and try to torment her other sleeping friends, until one of her teachers intervenes. She is a mischievous one. My hope is that all of her practice sleeping on a mat will aid in the transition to a toddler bed in the future.

In addition to napping on a mat at school, she is also being transitioned to one nap a day with some mixed success. Honestly, I don’t know how they get her to stay up until after noon without her having a fit. If we were to attempt that at home, we would have a major meltdown on our hands. But, she seems to be doing well. My only compliant is that she isn’t napping enough. Only one hour of napping a day results in some cranky evenings. I would think that limited naps a day would result in her sleeping in each morning, but nope, she still just loves waking up around 6am (although the past couple of days she has sleep until 7:20a or 6:45a). Perhaps once she gets used to the mat a little more, she will start napping for two hours. In the meantime, we continue to put her down for 2 naps at home.

And, just for fun, a picture of Evelina making one of her favorite faces.

Feeding a 1+ Year Old

I'll admit that I’m a little obsessed when it comes to feeding Evelina. I only want the best for her and that includes what gets put into her body. Exclusively-pumping when she wouldn’t breast feed to ensure she would get breast milk for as long as I could keep up the pumping routine, offering her organic formula, making the majority of her baby food (or offering her organic food from pouches…I’m also organic-obsessed), etc. I have spent A LOT of time feeding her and researching what’s best. Both Chris and I feel good knowing that up until this point, she has had a healthy diet, in addition to being exposed to many different foods, even if they may not always be her favorite.

Now that Evelina is almost 13 months, formula/milk is no longer her primary source of nutrients. For me, this means that I must monitor Evelina’s intake to ensure she is eating a balanced diet that is full of vitamins and minerals to keep her growing healthy and strong. I’ve been using this portion chart and really like it. I already know she eats more than enough fruit but most likely not enough veggies. So, I have been looking for recipes that incorporate veggies, that I could offer her at breakfast and during snack time, in lieu of just putting pieces of veggies on her plate (she gets tired of this method as can be witnessed by her throwing everything on the floor and watching me pick it up).

This weekend I whipped up a loaf of Deceptively Delicious Banana Bread, adding some cauliflower puree to the mix. Evelina and Chris both approved.  Especially when it was warm with melted butter.

Next up will be some sweet potato pancakes for breakfast and maybe a frittata with some mixed veggies. The best part about these recipes is they aren’t only for kids. Big kids, like Chris and I can eat them too!! This is a bonus, considering Evelina will eat most of what we prepare for ourselves.

Oh, and I’m not naïve…I know she is a toddler and toddler’s like to rebel when it comes to food. But, if I can offer her healthy options, then I’m doing the best that I can as a mom.

Tips and Tricks

I just love coming across tips and tricks to make life's little tasks that much easier. One of my most recent favorites is when loading the dishwasher, to load cutlery together by utensil type.  All spoons together, all forks together, etc.  That way, it makes emptying the dishwasher much easier since you don't have to sort.  Since I HATE emptying the dishwasher, this saves me a little bit of time. Yes, this is pretty basic, and I'm surprised I didn't think of it already, but sometimes you just have to learn something from someone else.

A couple of days ago, I came across this awesome technique for peeling kiwi.  I tried it last night while peeling kiwi for Evelina and it worked like a charm.  So much easier for me than dealing with the slippery little suckers in conjunction with a paring knife.  Chris will be very happy, considering I am extremely accident prone when slicing, chopping, or peeling.

Father's Day 2011

It's hard to believe that this was Chris' second Father's Day.  I've said it before and I will say it again, this year went by SOOOOO fast!!

Father's Day 2010

Chris is such a wonderful father to Evelina.  He is patient, caring, fun and playful, and doesn't even mind getting up during the night when she is in need of comforting (and Mama needs her beauty sleep).  He may not admit it, but I know he loves snuggling with her at night and falling asleep with her in the nursery.  It really is just too sweet.  It makes me love him even more.

In deep conversation

We can already see that Evelina is a daddy's girl.  She LOOOOOVVVVVES her Papa so much.  She beams whenever he enters a room, she crawls as quickly as she can to him, climbs on him and uses him as her jungle gym.  As soon as she hears the garage door open and I say that Papa is home, she starts looking around for him.  Just recently she started to cry when he drops her off at school (so heartbreaking).  Many times, if he is holding her and I try to take her, she will turn into his shoulder and hold on tight. So adorable!! It has really been such a joy to see their relationship blossom.  She is lucky to have such a wonderful DA-DA-DA-DA!!!

Sharing goofy faces :-)

We weren't able to spend the entire day together, but we did find time to have a little snack picnic as a family out in the yard while enjoying the beautiful afternoon sunshine.  While Chris was putting Evelina to bed, I whipped up one of his favorite meals, Shrimp Scampi, in celebration of his second Father's Day.  Yum-o.

Papa, I love you!!

Honey, I love you, too
Moi xoxo

PS:  I just realized that Chris wore the same shirt on both Father's days...what are the chances of that?!

Mirror Excitement

On Sunday, Evelina and I made a trip to NH to visit some family. At one point, I changed her diaper and then put her on the floor while I cleaned up. Little did I know she would be so happy about the floor to ceiling mirrors. We have full length mirrors in the house and little mirrors for her to play with, and we frequently gaze in the bathroom mirrors but these closet door mirrors were primo. Before we left, we had to warn Aunt Roz about the finger and mouth prints (Evelina was giving herself kisses). She said not to worry about it....my cousins, sister and I had done the same thing when we were little ones.

1st Birthday Party Recap

Even though the weather Gods decided to change the weather forecast 24-hours prior to Evelina's 1st birthday party from party cloudy and 70s to rainy and 60s, we still had a lot of fun.  Evelina's empty playroom was the perfect space for her toys and the space kept all of the kids busy for hours.  Phew!!

While we were planning Evelina's party, I was frequently asked if we would be having a 1st birthday party for Evelina. When I replied yes, everyone would roll their eyes and say, "She won't remember it anyway." This I know, but it was still a day to be celebrated...a celebration of life, a celebration of Chris and I surviving the first year of parenthood.  A life changing and amazing year!!  Something to truly be celebrated with the ones we love and those who helped us make it through.  Because, it really does take a village!!

If you'd like to check out some pictures from Evelina's 1st birthday shindig, click here.  I regret not taking more photos but it was a busy day.  Thanks Charity and Auntie KK for taking over.

12 Month Stats

Today was Evelina's 12 month well-baby visit.

In terms of development, she is on track with all of her milestones...even if she isn't walking yet or saying 5 words.  EVERYONE asks me if she is walking and I just want to tell people that not all babies walk by the time they are 1 year old, and even though she isn't walking, she is still normal.  There is a huge range or "normal" at this age.  With the exception of arriving into the world, Evelina has taken her sweet time in meeting all milestones.  Perhaps she is a perfectionist like her Mama?  Either way, she is very healthy and her pediatrician thinks she may be on the more adventuresome side based on the 20 minutes she was crawling, cruising and exploring the exam room.  Not sure if I agree, but only time will tell.  He thinks she will be walking sooner rather than later but he also thought she would be rolling in both directions soon after her 4 month appointment and that took her another 1-3 months!! Ha!!

Even after these reassuring well-baby visits, I still tend to worry about Evelina meeting or exceeding developmental milestones.  I know this will always be something that concerns me as she continues to grow and learn.  It is natural for parents to want their children to be intelligent and to succeed in everything they do, even if that means putting a square block into the square slot of the shape sorter.  I'm so proud of everything that Evelina has accomplished.  I don't need her to be advanced or a prodigy.  I just want her to explore the world and learn something new everyday.

At the end of the appointment she had blood taken with a smile on (literally) via a finger prick  and only 2 shots, which of course were preceded by the delayed, I won't breathe for 20 seconds, cry.  Do you know what the best treat for a toddler who just got shots is?  A band-aid to suck on from the finger that was just pricked.  Ick.

Evelina's Stats...

Weight: 20lbs 2oz (35th %ile) - Our little girl is no longer a peanut.  She is catching up to her "peers".  To think she started out at 5lbs 13oz (7th %ile) and got as low as 5lbs 4oz (2.5 %ile), and now she is over 20lbs.  So crazy!!  WOOHOO Evelina!!  Her pediatrician was impressed at how much she grew and that her growth curve is still trending upward.  Most babies have started to plateau by this point but our little Miss Evelina had some ground to make up.

Length: 30" (80th %ile). She has grown one foot exactly since birth.  No wonder she is in some 18 month clothes.

Head Circumference: 18" (70th %ile) - Only grew 1/2" since her 9 month visit.

Next appointment is at 15 months.

1st Birthday Photoshoot Faves

Some of my favorites from Evelina's 1st Birthday photoshoot with Heidi Hope. For the most part we are happy with the way they came out but I think we are done with studio shoots for awhile.  We had the option of shooting outside but since it was so humid and warm, we opted for inside...which was just as humid and warm (thanks to ineffective AC).  Either way, I think Evelina was captured perfectly and I'm glad we also got a nice shot of all the girls.

If you have a moment, could you comment on the preview post on Heidi Hope's blog?  If we get 15 comments, we get a free print (man they are pricey!!).

1st Birthday Photoshoot Preview

Last Friday, Mimi, Auntie KK and I took a trip with Evelina to Heidi Hope's studio to capture Evelina in her 1st birthday glory.  Click here for a sneak peek on Heidi's blog.

As smiley as Evelina usually is, it was A LOT of work to get her to smile during this photo session.  I'm eager to see the rest of the shots and hope to see her cute smile in more than just a few photos.

In case you didn't see, here are Heidi's blog posts for Evelina newborn shoot, and our maternity shoot

The Zoo, Birthday Cake and Presents

What a week it has been!!  A whirlwind past 10 days.  It feels nice to have a little bit of a breather, although life always seems super busy these days.

On Evelina's actual birthday, we started out the day with a candle in her scrambled eggs, a trip to the Southwick Zoo, followed by cake, presents, and play time.

We will most certainly take another trip to the Southwick Zoo.  Only about 40 minutes away, it was the perfect size for a little one with a large variety of animals.  We were able to walk through in about 3 hours, the perfect amount of time between morning and afternoon naps.  For the most part, Evelina wasn't sure what to make of the animals but if something moved or made noise, she would observe and analyze, just taking it all in.  Of course, our little nosy body couldn't let the day go by without an abundance of people watching.

I definitely hope we can make it a tradition of taking the day off to celebrate Evelina's birthday.  We had so much fun!!

Here are just a few photos from the day.

Happy Birthday Evelina!! Those aren't tears, just watery eyes.

12 Months of Evelina :: In Pictures

You know I couldn't let Evelina's 1st Birthday milestone pass by without a video in pictures, so without further ado, 12 Months of Evelina, in pictures (and yes, I know she isn't a boy, I just fell in love with the song).

PS: Sorry it is so long. I honestly think I took more photos of her in the past year then have been taken of me in my entire life. I need to get better about using the Flip video camera.

12 Months :: Happy 1st Birthday Evelina!!

Dear Evelina,
You are 12 months old, ONE YEAR OLD!! How did the first anniversary of your birth arrive so quickly? I have been thinking about this day for months and each time I would get misty-eyed as I re-lived your momentous birth in my memory. It is still so vivid yet often seems like it never actually happened. You are no longer a sleepy infant who lives for eating or being held. You have transformed into a beautiful toddler who lives for learning, exploring and bringing so much laughter into the lives of all who know you.

I never in a million years thought I could love someone as much as I love you. You have changed my life and you have changed me for the better. At the very moment of your birth, you provided me with the greatest gift of all, the gift of motherhood. All of the pain that accompanied each contraction during labor, the adrenaline rushing through my body to allow me to keep striving toward the ultimate goal, and the pure force required to push you into this world, all disappeared the moment I met you, my daughter, for the first time, and laid eyes on your beauty and perfection. I still gaze at you in amazement wondering how I got so lucky to be your Mama.

This past year has been an incredible learning experience, but has not been without mistakes. Despite the many challenges the first year of parenthood can present, I’ve always discovered what you needed, and how to get through each twist and turn. Although, at times, this year has been extremely exhausting and difficult, it has been the most rewarding 12 months of my life. And, with each day that passes my ultimate goal is to continue getting to know you, to teach you, and to learn how to be the best mother I can be just for you.

Sweet Evelina, you have come so far since your first screaming moment. You can smile, laugh, giggle, roll over, sit up, crawl, pull up and sit back down, sleep for 11-12 hours straight, feed yourself, explore with your tiny fingers and pick up the tiniest spec, babble and “talk”, wave, clap, high five, blow kisses, play peak-a-boo, show us where your head is, and so much more. You have accomplished so much in only 52 weeks of life.

Your Papa and I couldn’t be more proud of you. Just as we’ve enjoyed your first year and watching you grow each step of the way, we will continue to celebrate each moment of the upcoming year. We are looking forward to witnessing you succeed at the many milestones that are just waiting in the wings for you to accomplish, but most importantly, we are excited for you to just be you.

You are a blessing, a treasure, brighter than the sun and stars, and although you are still too little to make a wish for yourself on this, your first birthday, I will wish for you. I wish for a year full of happiness, love, fun and new discoveries, family, and friendship. You're Papa and I are lucky enough to be along for the ride with you.  We can't wait!!

Happy Birthday Evelina Marie-Claire, Evelina Bambina, Bean, Beanette, Peanut, Sweet Pea, Sweet Buttons!! I love you more than words could ever say.

You are the sunshine of my life,
Mommy

Yummy Salad

Taking a mini-break from the blog this week as we prepare for Evelina's first birthday.  Sniff, sniff.  But, I had to share one of my favorite recipes from the last few weeks. Paula Dean's Southwestern Avocado and Black Bean Salad.  I think it may be the only one of her recipes that doesn't include a stick (or more) of butter or a require a deep fryer.  It is super yummy and a perfect, quick, weeknight meal for the Summer.  I've been adding roasted chicken to make it more complete and filling.  Delectable.
